Maybe the Revolution WON'T Be Televised

Maybe... it won't even happen at all. I must bring to your attention this interesting and somewhat provocative article by Tony Long who writes for Wired Magazine based out of San Francisco.

Is it really that we are all just too 'busy;' paying rent, buying lofts, getting drunk, or just watching TV to really care, or act or to revolt? Sure we talk and laugh and get MAD about it all, sometimes. But when it really comes down to IT, nothing happens, no one learns and nothing changes. But as we all (or not) learned way back in college, 'the only thing that is constant IS change' (and I can't even remember or find who said it... starts with a 'P'). Something will change...

Here's a quote I did find which is semi-relevant. "It is necessary to understand that war is common, strife is customary, and all things happen because of strife and necessity." Heraclitus 500 B.C.

I was thinking about this the other day, and was talking about this today with my client. Do you remember the 80's when every single day we were on the verge of nuclear war? It didn't happen. Were we ever really close? Or was it just a media event?

yeah right on dude. i think everyone is just burnt and disillusioned. there have been plenty of protests but what have they done? everyone feels powerless. and i think there's a lot of confusion amongst the
general populace about how we should get out of iraq. the democratic party can't even figure out the best course of action. i think folks are just hanging out until november and hopefully we'll get a regime
change in the house and senate. but i'm ready to start the march on washington and throw bush out....

Some revolutions are lost.

Yet all empires fall!!

AL GORE FOR PRESIDENT!!! (Since we know he was elected president once already, can we just skip the election process and just stick him in office? Hell, that's what Bush did for himself.)

Oh, here's my other solution: someone needs to assasinate Bush. Dick Cheney will be so shocked that he has a heart attack and drops dead. Two birds with one stone, people. That's all I'm saying.

In my mind, you get what you vote for. The internet is way too dispersed to have any meaningful impact and it would be unconstitutional anyway. That's why we have elected officials. Anyway, you do get what you vote for. For example, if I vote Republican, I
have certain expectations-limited government interference; adherence to the free market principles, a strong military, etc. If I'm voting Democratic, I would look to those candidates looking to expand government, healthcare, general free-bies if you will ala France, Germany and other European countries. It depends on your political philosophy.

When you say that "people are so in love with their money and what it can buy that they're missing out out on life" that seems to me a pretty general statement. I love money and what it can do---namely buy me
freedom. Of course, I haven't, in my estimation, missed out on much life-I just got back from Costa
Rica with nine dudes and had a great time. I travel frequently and keep very active. But, what you miss is this: I actually like what I do and
what I do is provide a valuable service to people-namely, helping them attain financial indepence so
they don't have to rely on something so unsure as Social Security. I have very good friends and family
all over the country and I have the freedom to pretty much do what I want, when I want. Not a bad life.
I think you can generalize too much that what you're doing is what everyone should want to be doing and
that's just not the case. For example, you may receive your greatest joy by having five kids, raising them, taking them to school, joining the PTA, etc. That's true and I see it everyday. It may not be my cup of tea, but I'm not them and what turns their crank may not turn mine--or yours for that matter. It doesn't
mean it's right or wrong, it's simply the freedom to make those decisions that matter to us as individvuals.

I met plenty of ex-pats in Costa Rica. Livin' low and chilin. That's very much a surfer type lifestyle that grew up with, but I also have a deep drive for success in whatever I do so it would be hard for me to kick-it day in and day out. I need to feel like I'm contributing to the larger picture in my own way.

I believe it was Hericlitus (sp?) who said that. This came up recently with a girl I was talking to. She had it tattooed in Greek on the instep of her right foot. Unique tat, so it caught my eye and I asked her about it. I knew the quote, but not the source. Said she'd studied philosophy at Santa Cruz, and according to her it was Hericlitus.

As for revolution, I've wondered too why we haven't burned the house down in the face of current administrative atrocities. Could it be because the nation has been equally devided on the subject? Dumbfucks out there have swallowed so completely the crap they've been told that if there was a revolution we'd not only be fighting the power but our brothers as well, like civil war all over again. Or are we just too polite, and civilized? I think that's part of it too.

Fuck, we can't even get the shithead impeached let alone tear anything down. When you compare what the Rep. party was able to do to Clinton for a moral slip, with what this administration has done, it absolutely blows your mind.

What the fuck? Like the man said, these politics are not new. Meanwhile, we get old and die. It's difficult, I have to constantly remind myself, but I can't be concerned with the poor choices other people make. If they throw someone under the bus, I put my hand down and help them up... if I have the balls, the guts, which I must preserve by not entertaining the death game they create.
I think it's unfortunate that money is valued above so many wonderful, creative, human things. But I don't value it like that. It's not my problem what the rest of them value, if I don't make it my problem.
No one is free until they rid themselves of all need and desire. Not my bag. However, as mortal slaves we CAN choose WHAT we serve.

Oh, how crude (but true!)... I really shouldn't write when drunk, or at night. Pardon me, please. I should hope to represent myself with more depth and aplomb... Do not judge me by this coarse pronouncement. And of course, such serious debate deserves a more honourable contribution. I now humbly remove myself...
